OneFuture Coachella Valley hosts its Sixth Annual Student Leadership Conference

Cristina Gregorio, Director of College and Career Success

College completion is critical to driving upward mobility, because it unlocks doors to opportunities. As a result, mentoring the next generation of leaders toward graduation is a key priority for OneFuture Coachella Valley (OFCV) and our regional partners.  OFCV held their Sixth Annual Student Leadership Conference on June 18th-19, hosting 175 scholarship recipients for college and career success workshops with 30 community partners. The 2019 conference theme was The Art of Self-Love and focused on encouraging students to take care of their mental health and wellbeing throughout their educational journey.

Students had an opportunity to hear from two keynote speakers:

  • Adrian Gonzalez, Vice President of Students Services at San Diego Miramar College, shared his personal story of becoming a leader in education and the community, along with tips on how to manage your health in order to prepare for a successful academic and professional journey.
  • Victor Manuel Perez, Riverside County Supervisor, shared his story as a local leader driving regional change in support of local youth and the community. He encouraged students to pursue their education and return to their community to create positive change.

Conference workshops focused on financial literacy, academic preparedness, professional development, and mental health sessions that included meditation and mindfulness. Jason Tate, Founder of Human Health Initiative, provided guided meditations throughout the day with the goal of teaching students how to calm their mind during stressful and challenging times.

The post-conference survey revealed that over 90% of respondents rated the meditation portion as good or excellent. Many scholars commented that although it was a first time experience, they enjoyed learning how to meditate and look forward to applying this powerful tool in their daily life. Fatima Salceda, OFCV Alum said, “I’ve had the opportunity to attend this conference almost every year since it started and I can honestly say that every year it gets better. As a student, I always walked out very inspired from the stories that speakers share about their careers. Now, as a young professional pursuing a career in a higher education, I am so grateful to know that this great resource is still available to students.”

The OFCV Student Leadership Conference brings together local and national leaders to help students successfully navigate the college going process through college graduation and entrance into the workforce while helping them develop and sharpen their leadership skills. This conference would not have been possible without the contribution of sponsors like Rabobank and The Anderson Children’s foundation, along with all the presenters and panelist who shared their time and wisdom with 2019 OFCV Scholarship Recipients.
